In this dissertation the author surveyed and interviewed missionaries to determine what spiritual disciplines most helped them stay effective in their ministry. The results of this research point out certain spiritual disciplines which missionaries use to remain spiritually healthy-prayer, engaging Scripture, worship, fellowship, and service.  Other disciplines were done to a lesser extent.  There was also recognition by the missionaries that workload, busyness, one's environment, and cross-cultural living impacted the effective practice of those disciplines. These relationships incorporate mentors who are both military professionals and mentors who are religious leaders of integrity. Using a mixed methods approach to descriptive research, the author researched biblical and historical methods of discipleship, ministerial formation, modern research in mentoring, and surveyed chaplains about personal experiences with mentors during their early military careers. Sixty Chinese scholars who have become Christians since coming to North America were surveyed.  The author examined the qualitative research, analyzed the answers and observed and organized answers most given. Christians caring and sharing their lives was the top factor that encouraged belief and bad behavior of Christians was the top factor impeding belief.
