In this dissertation the author surveyed and interviewed missionaries to determine what spiritual disciplines most helped them stay effective in their ministry. The results of this research point out certain spiritual disciplines which missionaries use to remain spiritually healthy-prayer, engaging Scripture, worship, fellowship, and service.  Other disciplines were done to a lesser extent.  There was also recognition by the missionaries that workload, busyness, one's environment, and cross-cultural living impacted the effective practice of those disciplines. These relationships incorporate mentors who are both military professionals and mentors who are religious leaders of integrity. Using a mixed methods approach to descriptive research, the author researched biblical and historical methods of discipleship, ministerial formation, modern research in mentoring, and surveyed chaplains about personal experiences with mentors during their early military careers. Sixty Chinese scholars who have become Christians since coming to North America were surveyed.  The author examined the qualitative research, analyzed the answers and observed and organized answers most given. Christians caring and sharing their lives was the top factor that encouraged belief and bad behavior of Christians was the top factor impeding belief. Experienced multicultural team missionaries were provided with 12 team-related factors to be evaluated. The top three factors were distinguished as: Team management, dealing with conflict and inclusion in decision making. In order to accomplish this task, the author interviewed German field officers. Three concerns were expressed. First, current ministry priorities are unsatisfying for the majority of officers. Second, the officers long to invest more of their time in spiritual formation. Third, the officers perceive that the THQs priorities inadequately relate to their own desires for ministry. This study gives three recommendations to the Salvation Army: First, clear ministry valance. Second, maintaining relationships with officers. Using descriptive research methodology, twelve missions-active churches were selected for analysis, and case studies were written so that other churches could learn from their example. Pastors and missions leadership teams were primary factors motivating these churches. Missions champions involve others in communicating God's heart for all peoples. Missions education shapes the church culture through multigenerational learning experiences. Missions-active churches are prayerful, supportive and sending churches. Surveys and interviews of new believers, mature believers and leaders revealed that growing churches, randomly chosen, have members who invite widely and, particularly, those whom the Spirit is drawing. Visitors are struck by the welcome, the fellowship, the worship, and a sense of connecting with God. Those who participated affirmed the importance of preaching in the churches studied. Areas of special consideration include the place of rhetorical principles in preaching, and the use of traditional evangelical invitations at the end of sermons. The study examines Christ's place in preaching persuasively, and the need for preparation for listening to sermons on the part of the laity.
