Matthew","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project proposes that preaching difficult texts with pastoral sensitivity can produce edifying sermons, proving useful certain texts of the Bible which have been excluded from the lectionary and thereby written off as irrelevant or even harmful to the Church. Six challenging biblical texts, from Genesis, Exodus, Psalms, Isaiah, Matthew, and Acts, none of which appear in the Revised Common Lectionary, are presented to a focus group for study and feedback. The congregation took part in an eight-week study with multiple opportunities to engage the parables each week. Research methods included ethnographic practices of listening, observing, and reading historical documents; written surveys to gauge how participants viewed congregational hospitality and service to neighbors before and after the study; and practical theological methods such as reflection/action and the four tasks of practical theological interpretation. Bosch's reading of the Gospel of Matthew, in dialogue with the Committee on Evangelism and Church Development of the Presbytery of Tampa Bay, in the hope to visualize from a theological perspective the contribution that immigrant groups can bring to the mainline traditions. The church has participated in and is living through a major cultural shift.  In this context this project examines the cultural shift and the generation that has come to exemplify this shift: the 'baby boomers' born between the 1946 and 1964. A similar time of anxiety and discontinuity is found in the Gospel of Matthew.  The project examines two texts that illustrate Matthew's Christology and ecclesiology--the 'Great Commission' and the Beatitudes from the 'Sermon on the Mount,' Matthew 28:19-20 and 5:1-16--and compares them to find understanding and identity for mainline denominationalism.
