This pilot study (n=4) explored the effectiveness of its curriculum on spiritual growth, vocational discernment, and the use of spiritual practices. The curriculum included book studies, mission outreach, and the spiritual practices of prayer, Scripture reading, silence, and shared work like the Taizé community. Quantitative and qualitative data was collected at baseline, mid-point, and endpoint. The author used basic qualitative research tools to plan and execute a four-week class with participants ranging from fourth grade to senior adulthood. Each class addressed one or more of the desired outcomes listed above. A set of guiding questions was designed to lead teachers to plan class experiences. The guiding questions were pre-tested, interviews were conducted, and the guiding questions were refined. A teacher used the guiding questions to create and lead an adult class. The resulting class was observed and evaluated. Follow-up interviews evaluated the guiding questions in diverse settings. Traditional didactic classroom instruction is not always sufficient, because it does not provide an opportunity for elders to apply what they have learned. To compensate for this lack of experiential learning, role-play was incorporated into elder training in a particular congregation, resulting in the conclusion that role-play is a useful training tool in certain situations. This report proposes a composite educational methodology using Vygotskyan and Jungian human development theory can provide education care that nurtures senior adult formational maturity in relation to death, dying and bereavement issues. This project focuses on current patterns, priorities, topics and resources for new member education within the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta. A survey was sent to all congregations within this diverse Presbytery. Responses show that a majority of congregations offer new member education, with a high percentage of participation. Introduction to the Reformed, Presbyterian tradition is one of three equal priorities. This project explores how a congregation of today might recover the catechumenate, a dynamic pattern of catechesis and formation that accompanies baptism and profession of faith for adults. Because this ministry depends on both laity and clergy participation, a model proposed by Daniel Benedict is used with current members of a local congregation in order to experience the shape and feel of such a ministry.
