This observation prompted this project on evangelism as an imperative redemptive mission of God for church growth. Students at Deeper Life School of Evangelism participated in focus groups about possible solutions to this problem. This report is a grounded theory research project that brings together data from surveys of 329 members of the Christian Community Development Association as well as interviews with 15 CCDA practitioners in Atlanta. It utilizes a method of Participatory Action Research in order to develop a model of communal discernment for congregational use. As the United Methodist Church in particular continues its numerical decline there is a renewed effort to discover models for ministry that are actively and missionally engaging the communities they serve. This case study of Solid Rock United Methodist Church provides one such model. From the research five transferable insights emerged. This study uses qualitative methods through use of questionnaire to find out what factors relate to numerical growth in congregational membership. The study combines responses from survey of congregational worshippers and leaders from a random sample of 110 members of Bethlehem Reformed Church of God. Results point to: Narrow view of ministry and mission; centralized hierarchical clergy and; their inability to enhance practical help for particularly needy youth members, and children as factors in ensuring and promoting growth. From a 'missional church' perspective, this research provides practical, biblical, and theological rationales to seek outsiders'visions of church. It presents findings from 'on-the-street' interviews with un-churched persons. Their images of church were rich, emphasized a communal faith dimension, and confirmed biblical and theological themes. This project focuses on NC United Methodist's appropriation of Wesleyan ecclesiology to determine an appropriate response. Sermons from district superintendents and interviews with formerly unchurched United Methodists are utilized to clarify the Wesleyan answer to this perennial question.
