This project proposes that this is a detrimental shift away from the church's mission of discipleship. The project seeks to investigate a healthy understanding of membership and explore how the church might faithfully engage new members of the church in a discipleship model of church life. The research was conducted with a participatory action research process by a group of representative members and non-members in a particular church. This project focuses on the implementation of missional principles in a particular congregation to shift its narrative of decline to a narrative of revitalization. The report explores Second Presbyterian Church's historical identity leading to its period of decline, identifies missional principles, and then traces the narrative of the implementation of those principles within the congregation. As the United Methodist Church in particular continues its numerical decline there is a renewed effort to discover models for ministry that are actively and missionally engaging the communities they serve. This case study of Solid Rock United Methodist Church provides one such model. From the research five transferable insights emerged. This study uses qualitative methods through use of questionnaire to find out what factors relate to numerical growth in congregational membership. The study combines responses from survey of congregational worshippers and leaders from a random sample of 110 members of Bethlehem Reformed Church of God. Results point to: Narrow view of ministry and mission; centralized hierarchical clergy and; their inability to enhance practical help for particularly needy youth members, and children as factors in ensuring and promoting growth. A change is needed for the church.  It is critical for the church to understand Generation X and learn from those who affiliate with congregations.  Here are described the findings of focus groups of new members composed of different demographic groups at two congregations.  Through surveys, these findings and expected generational characteristics are compared to Gen X new members of Central Presbyterian Church in Saint Paul.
