The church must change its conversation with young adults if it desires a hopeful future beyond the current generation of pastoral leadership. Through analyzing call narratives of ordained young adults, and by identifying ministry strategies of nurturing congregations, best congregational practices emerge: asking the 'call' question, mentoring, service, leadership opportunities, and connecting with the larger church. Through conversations with members in which mutual sharing took place and responses to surveys were made, ethnographic studies, review of relevant literature, and subsequent analysis of data that were gathered, what emerged was an education program that deepened that biblical theological understanding of participants as people of God. This study focuses on a particular Baptist body, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, and the experiences of some of its recent seminary graduates transitioning into pastoral ministry. The report explores three particular dynamics associated with heathy transitions for first-call ministers: peer learning, mentoring, and congregational support. This study seeks a documented and experiential framework by reviewing a candidacy and call approval process in a local presbytery to determine whether and how the church should engage with parachurch ministry.
