Sociological and theological resources regarding play were evaluated, with particular interest in how the 'unwritten' rules of a play community help to structure that community. Since that time, there has been little or no thought given to the subject.  This project seeks to explore the relationship between theology and play while addressing the question: Why does the church seem so reluctant to play?  An overview of play theology is presented including the thought of Huizinga, Moltmann, Keen, Berryman, and Johnston.  A discussion of psychological play theory is included considering the work of Freud, Piaget, Sutton-Smith, and Winnicott.  This overview shows both common points of understanding as well as important distinctions in play theory.  A new perspective of play is offered that focuses on the idea of God as the initiator of play as an act of grace and on human play as an appropriate response to that grace.  This new perspective presupposes a theology of love and freedom rather than fear and control. The many contributions of Glenn Bannerman are examined. As a practitioner rather than theorist, Bannerman embodies the new perspective of play in his methods and actions.  These methods and actions are offered as a model of play at its best."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127476720631808,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:44:31.958Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Christopher Lyle Crotwell","hits":1,"label":"Christopher Lyle Crotwell"},{"value":"Dana W Sutton","hits":1,"label":"Dana W Sutton"},{"value":"Gary E Laird","hits":1,"label":"Gary E Laird"},{"value":"James G Hughes","hits":1,"label":"James G Hughes"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Play","hits":4,"label":"Play"},{"value":"Bannerman, Glen","hits":1,"label":"Bannerman, Glen"},{"value":"Children--Religious life","hits":1,"label":"Children--Religious life"},{"value":"Christian education of adults","hits":1,"label":"Christian education of adults"},{"value":"Cultural pluralism","hits":1,"label":"Cultural pluralism"},{"value":"Education","hits":1,"label":"Education"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":4,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":4,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":4,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"1995","hits":1,"label":"1995"},{"value":"1998","hits":1,"label":"1998"},{"value":"2007","hits":1,"label":"2007"},{"value":"2012","hits":1,"label":"2012"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":4,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":4,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":4,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":4,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
