Expectations of the congregation do not always line up with the clergypersons' own sense of calling and perceived gifts and graces. Research included an ethnographic study, featuring both an auto-ethnographic aspect that considers the emerging relationship of pastor and congregation and interviews with congregational leaders and United Methodist clergypersons within South Georgia. Through conversations with members in which mutual sharing took place and responses to surveys were made, ethnographic studies, review of relevant literature, and subsequent analysis of data that were gathered, what emerged was an education program that deepened that biblical theological understanding of participants as people of God. The Church claims a theology of communion of the saints which is exemplified in the sacrament of the Lord's Supper. However, it has not significantly crossed the cultural divide. This paper examines the understanding of two of these church communities, one Mexican-American and one Anglo-American, regarding the Lord's Supper. This research explores how the use of narrative form and style in preaching increases empathy among the members of St. Matthew Presbyterian Church. After an introduction explaining the rationale for the project, background information about St. Matthew is given.  The two phases of qualitative research-sermon feedback sessions and individual interviews-are reported. Explications of empathy and how these theories played out in the research are woven into the reporting of the research. This project focuses on one White pastor's Lenten preaching series against White racism with a White Presbyterian PC(USA) congregation. The purpose was to cause transformation within the congregation resulting in observable changes toward undoing racism. The author first defines the catalyst for the project. Through historical research and a brief analysis of the background materials, the author sets two goals to define the parameters for the project. Based on the history of race relations and civil rights in Birmingham as well as the history of the two congregations, the project demonstrates that in relations between congregations each needs to learn about the other in order to find understanding, acceptance, cooperation, and sharing.
