It reviews the conditions of and reasons for these clergywomen’s spiritual crisis in today’s church and society. As a history project, it provides close readings of two women mystics: Showings by Julian of Norwich and Interior Castle by Teresa of Avila. These writers’ teachings emerged from their ministries to people who suffered during plagues, wars, colonialism, and unstable leadership. This project tested the process of intentionally utilizing spiritual practices such as prayer, scripture reading, journaling and group reflection as a part of short term mission trips to strengthen spiritual growth among participants. Participatory Action Research was the primary research method employed for the development of a reflection guide and follow-up interviews with volunteers in mission. This report highlights six disciplines from Benedictine and Ignatian spirituality, prayer and scripture, the divine office, humility, hospitality, discernment and the examen as tools for modern clergy and explores the benefits of the disciplines in deepening, strengthening, and tending the spiritual life in the often unbalanced life in the church. The history and praxis of each of the spiritual disciplines are developed.  A plan for ministry is presented for an eight-week small-group process which allows for a time of gathering together, a presentation of material for the discipline to be practiced during the following week, time for sharing the previous week's experience, a time for members to share concerns or celebrations, and a time of prayer.
