The question is vexing for United Methodists who practice 'open communion' and who are open to high levels of church involvement from non-members. This project focuses on NC United Methodist's appropriation of Wesleyan ecclesiology to determine an appropriate response. Sermons from district superintendents and interviews with formerly unchurched United Methodists are utilized to clarify the Wesleyan answer to this perennial question. John Wesley was a source of support and dialogue with the women whose work as lay preachers helped his religious movement successfully spread throughout Europe.  However, this history is concealed from the modern church that continues to inhibit the progress of women.  The history exists, but has not been made readily available to educate the church.  There is a delicate impasse between modern women and the Methodist hierarchy.
