The project explores texts on preaching to determine the degree to which they see transformation as the purpose of preaching. Walter Brueggemann and Walter Wink offer insight into what transformation means and how it comes about. Transformative preaching seeks to help the listener move from the destroying way of dominant cultural values to the giving way of covenant rooted in neighbor love. The preacher evokes transformation with Scriptural images that offer alternative visions of how life can be lived faithfully and meaningfully. The project develops a model for preaching that will aid in the transformative work of pastoral ministry, and demonstrates this model in three sermons. The sermons are evaluated by a group that assesses their faithfulness to the model."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128644854218752,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:03:05.977Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T05:12:21Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:10:22Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b0f0462d-9376-4fbf-a208-f073c38a379e","accessControl_ssim":["452cf9ee-78d4-402d-a463-a25e2d99c699"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The challenge of nontraditional families in the church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T05:12:20Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:14:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["22d4b6d6-7aaa-4bf8-8200-c16dc5d3bacb"],"hasLease_ssim":["07491f58-81ba-4c40-ac4e-ef29ea87a041"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Marcia Y Riggs"],"year_tesim":["1996"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Marni Politte Harmony"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with families","Family","Feminist ethics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["'Traditional' family structures are reflected in an increasingly small minority of families in Western culture. To assist clergy and laity in understanding and respondingto disestablishment, the project presents a symposium that is then criticized by a select group of pastors and laypersons."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127383725572096,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:43:03.271Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:49:56Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:09:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"aba64f8a-98c4-4b6e-b473-a1fda454961b","accessControl_ssim":["a63379cf-c463-4a37-8e70-149852a26c70"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A research project to study a police chaplain's pastoral care of police officers when a fellow officer is fatally shot . . ."],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:49:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:05:16Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["60dcd837-691f-4b6b-b941-8c717682c24c"],"hasLease_ssim":["ce367fa3-4e9a-429c-96af-3b3c19b03780"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Jasper N Keith"],"year_tesim":["1996"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Dennis G Whitaker"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Grief","Chaplains, Police","Police","Pastoral counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project treats the trauma and grief police officers experience when a fellow officer is killed in the line of duty or commits suicide. Psychological assessment, sociological perspective, and theological analysis are necessary to an understanding of the spirituality of African American males and their relationships to churches. Masculinity issues and anger are primary psychological factors. Societal definitions of masculinity, institutions of male socialization, and work's relationship to self-esteem are crucial sociological influences. The role of the church, anthropomorphisms in relation to images of evil, the earthly father image in relation to the heavenly father image, and the contrast of the Nation of Islam with Christian churches offer essential theological insight. This project offers strategies to reverse patterns of declining spirituality, adherence, and attendance among African American males."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129119842369536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:10:38.961Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:49:26Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:03:29Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7d9036ff-8a28-4856-bb30-20b5e6d3394d","accessControl_ssim":["4d7409be-ad1c-4f51-b7e8-c463a6cfc534"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Rites and rituals of faith in Exilic times"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:49:25Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:50:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["084bf2cc-a784-40f4-84ad-2acc75c069a1"],"hasLease_ssim":["2745af74-90e9-4404-9c5c-9fb8a00e8e28"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Erskine Clarke"],"year_tesim":["1996"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Grady J Perryman"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christianity and culture","Ritual","Jews--History--0586-332 BC"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["After examining some metaphors for explaining the relationship of culture and gospel in America, this project claims 'exile' as the defining one for ministry today.
