theological categories. Through narrative, people come to understand their identity, who they are as children of God and as members of the community of faith. It is largely through the narratives of the Bible that God discloses God's self, thus bringing the light of revelation to people. Similarly, it is through the narratives of the New Testament that we come to understand who and what Jesus Christ is, our christology. Also our ethics are greatly affected because the decisions we make and the actions we take are both greatly dependent on our sense of belonging to a community that upholds the moral and ethical standards known through biblical narratives. Recognizing the tremendous power of narrative in all of these areas and psychological areas as well, it would seem that narrative sermons hold a great potential to help church members move in positive directions both theologically and psychologically and hence spiritually. Therefore the act of ministry for this dissertation is the preaching of narrative sermons and the evaluation of the effectiveness of these sermons. Fifteen biblical texts support this form of prayer. Prayers from four mystics were examined. This paper provides an overview of the Souper Bowl of Caring, looks at the biblical basis for the project and examines several respected hunger programs. The problem is addressed in this project through interviews of professors of homiletics and biblical studies as well as parish ministers, to discover the basic bridges used to move from the English text into the original languages and then forward to the preaching or teaching event. Groundwork is presented analyzing the basic hermeneutical question of what may be lost in translating the biblical languages across vastly different cultures over a time-span of two thousand years or more. This research focuses on the work of James Barr and Eugene Nida. The interview research of professors and ministers reveals numerous bridges for productively moving from the original text forward into preaching and teaching. Implications and cautions for preaching and teaching are presented, along with a summary of useful resources. The process was tested by parish ministers. Group study focuses on cherished practices of the church, such as baptism, weekly observance of the Lord's Supper, and inclusive ministry. Critical dialogue among all the group moves the group to lift up specific ways that the church can practice in its mission what it practices in its worship. This project succeeds in heightening awareness among the group that worship practices necessitate outreach in mission. The problem stated is that currently the two processes are alienated from the church's mission as a result of institutionalism. The method of research was to gather information from three major fields: sociology, history, and theology/ecclesiology. The research substantiated the existence of institutionalism and its negative effect upon consultation and the itineracy.
