This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself'' (Matt. 22:36-38). This report explores the relationship of mission and stewardship. It is focused on the life of a particular congregation where increased involvement in hands-on mission has led to a deepened understanding of stewardship. Engaging in ministry with people who are hurting, grieving, lonely, poor, and oppressed, and working together for justice, peace, and reconciliation has directly affected how members of the community are faithful stewards of all that God has entrusted to their care. Jesus also said, 'For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also' (Matt. 6:21). This research indicates that the inverse is also true. When people invest their hearts in the mission of the church it is very likely their treasure will follow."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128249600835584,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:56:49.034Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:23:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:44:36Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0ce4c722-c958-4e75-a283-332c2d4d4dc3","accessControl_ssim":["afd35ccc-5b2d-4973-8b21-f732e948773f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The church, poverty, and radical compassion: a first step through the threshold"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:23:17Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:28:49Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["cf9a01ee-5b6b-4faa-aad2-d2c361c7fc31"],"hasLease_ssim":["68699217-feb2-4d93-a4f4-64cb0ac16729"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Martha L Moore-Keish","Ralph C Watkins"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kenneth Earl Hughes"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Poverty","Compassion--Religious aspects--Christianity","Poor and the church","Church work","Jesus Christ","Church work with the poor","Decatur Presbyterian Church (Decatur, Ga)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The persistence of poverty stands as a constant challenge to the Christian church. In fact, the Bible records how prominent 'song' was during the days of the Hebrews, as well as in the early years of the Christian church. This report briefly explores how sung theology was used in the Bible, how theologians over the centuries debated its use, how sung theology has come to be used in the post-modern church, and, specifically, how it is practiced in two very different congregational settings. The model for this project is the case study in which both congregations have been carefully analyzed by the author and in which the pastors and members of both congregations have had the opportunity to express their own thoughts through the means of surveys and congregations. By law, schools offer a limited scope of sexuality in curriculum confined to relatively universal values and medical information. As a community of faith, the church has an essential voice and obligation to provide sexuality education beyond what the secular world provides tweens, youth in grades 4-7, and their parents during this crucial developmental stage. Through conversation with four focus groups who participated in a faith-based sexuality education program and an interview with the author of a public school comprehensive sexuality education curriculum, this project explores theological reasons that impel us to educate the whole self as we follow our baptismal call."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128903416283136,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:07:12.561Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:22:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:12:19Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b97f019c-223e-44b5-87cd-8338b947026d","accessControl_ssim":["c322b23a-9117-4070-90bf-e716caba50fb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A manual for preparing congregations to receive pastoral leadership in a cross-racial, cross-cultural appointment in the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:22:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:28:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["70633de4-2418-4171-ab72-ed695e60632e"],"hasLease_ssim":["e400888d-3b4f-428b-a38f-7d2c05b78a2f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Jeffery L Tribble","Paul Junggap Huh"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["L K Pasley Pendleton"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Race relations","United Methodist Church (U.S.).
