This project focuses on selected church members and the role of the memorial service as the substitute for the ancestral sacrifice. The history and form of ancestral sacrifice is explored and prayerful remembrance is studied in regard to the memorial service. Yet, American-born Presbyterians often act as if this were not true. When faced with a decision in the church, they turn to procedure and polity for direction rather than to God. The story told in this report is one of an American-born Presbyterian praying with the Apostle Paul about an invitation to leadership of the church development ministry team. This study uses qualitative methods through use of questionnaire to find out what factors relate to numerical growth in congregational membership. The study combines responses from survey of congregational worshippers and leaders from a random sample of 110 members of Bethlehem Reformed Church of God. Results point to: Narrow view of ministry and mission; centralized hierarchical clergy and; their inability to enhance practical help for particularly needy youth members, and children as factors in ensuring and promoting growth. From a 'missional church' perspective, this research provides practical, biblical, and theological rationales to seek outsiders'visions of church. It presents findings from 'on-the-street' interviews with un-churched persons. Their images of church were rich, emphasized a communal faith dimension, and confirmed biblical and theological themes. The question is vexing for United Methodists who practice 'open communion' and who are open to high levels of church involvement from non-members. This project focuses on NC United Methodist's appropriation of Wesleyan ecclesiology to determine an appropriate response. Sermons from district superintendents and interviews with formerly unchurched United Methodists are utilized to clarify the Wesleyan answer to this perennial question. This project report attempts to explore the factors that have contributed to that growth. Data for this project was gathered by surveying the literature published by Senior Pastor Andy Stanley, and several NPCC staff members. This project focuses on current patterns, priorities, topics and resources for new member education within the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta. A survey was sent to all congregations within this diverse Presbytery. Responses show that a majority of congregations offer new member education, with a high percentage of participation. Introduction to the Reformed, Presbyterian tradition is one of three equal priorities.
