The Twelve Steps offer a spirituality which has often caused confusion along confessional Lutherans.  Methodology involved interviewing Lutheran alcoholics, non-alcoholic Lutherans and clergy. The Twelve Steps were evaluated according to law and gospel. A brief study of the influence of American civil religion and two kingdom theology gave a backdrop in which to place the Twelve Steps.
