Attachment theory has revolutionized marriage counseling through models such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). There is discussion within the literature concerning the compatibility of these models with a Christian worldview, as well as examples of and proposals for integration. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with nine counselors from various denominations and backgrounds who incorporate their Christian worldview explicitly within their counseling. The interviews focused on gaining data with three research questions: How does a Christian worldview shape a counselor’s understanding of marriage attachment? How does a Christian worldview shape a counselor’s process of counseling (including goals, interventions, assignments, and self of the therapist)? How does a counselor with a Christian worldview utilize the Bible in counseling (including specific passages and biblical themes)? The literature review focused on three key areas: Adult attachment and marriage counseling; biblical framework for marriage and attachment; and integrating Christian worldview and attachment-based marriage counseling. This study concluded that there are diverse and dynamic ways the Christian worldview shapes a counselor’s approach to attachment-based marriage counseling. They use a range of biblical themes and passages. They find the work deeply personal, but feel resources are limited. Christian counselors as well as pastors have an opportunity to deepen their reflection on the biblical framework for marriage attachment, related themes, and specific biblical passages. The field can benefit from additional research and resources in these areas."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2025/Shomo_Kenneth_DMin_2025.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"_version_":1848718209202520064,"timestamp":"2025-11-13T23:04:34.389Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:56:43Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:38:15Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5bfd6a6d-d9e8-478a-9881-6c9369fd53fc","accessControl_ssim":["0f7378e5-ada8-488f-9baa-24a6f4288bec"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Digitization \u0026 neodocetism : Generation Z's understanding of their bodies in light of expanding digital existences"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:56:43Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:50:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ca511cd4-d4e1-425d-81b9-18611bdfa911"],"hasLease_ssim":["8fd636d7-e9ca-42fb-9fbd-9771296b7e58"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Dan Doriani"],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Seth Troutt"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with youth","Pastoral counseling","Church work with young adults"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study is to examine how Christian therapists and professors describe the impact of digitization on Generation Z’s bodily self-concept. Generation Z has grown up with phones in their hands and with their friends in their phones. Pastors must consider the effects digitization will have on the iGen and give substantial reflection on how digitized ecclesiologies might contribute to gnostic instincts in the information age. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with seven Christian therapists and professors with extensive experience working with Generation Z. The interviews focused on gaining data with three research questions: 1) How do Christian therapists and professors describe Gen Z’s self-understanding of their bodies? 2) How do Christian therapists and professors describe the impact of digitization on Gen Z’s views of their bodies? 3) How do Christian therapists and professors advise ministry leaders to minister to Gen Z concerning Gen Z Christians’ views of their bodies? The literature review focused on four key areas to understand ministry in this context: theology of the body, theology of technology, digital effect on bodily self-concept, and Generation Z’s relationship with digitization. This study concluded that digitization does contribute to overly developed dualistic instincts in Generation Z. This reduces personhood to cognition, promotes dissociative instincts with regards to bodily processes, dislodges self from place, and fragments self-concept. Ministry leaders ought to resist the effects of digitization by means of teaching a robust theology of the body, training parents, creating embodied experiences, and helping Generation Z see the goodness of congruence in Christ."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://covenantlibrary.org/etd/2021/Troutt_Seth_DMin_2021.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130860198559744,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:38:18.694Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:30:53Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:35:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"30e3abb6-37ef-4197-8c71-85dbe0ebf074","accessControl_ssim":["662b288b-7112-4864-b349-475ae6ad9047"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Between mental illness and faith: the commission of pastoral care"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:30:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:33:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["30a21ea6-ada6-42fe-be8e-55be86d538ac"],"hasLease_ssim":["d52a3369-fdb9-486d-93ee-1adad486f43a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard Winter"],"year_tesim":["2018"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Lawrence Morganfield III"],"subject_tesim":["Health and religion","Pastoral psychology","Church work","Pastoral counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This dissertation was researched to discover how churches are meeting the needs of the mentally ill parishioners. From the findings, the seminary may evaluate and modify the existing marriage preparation education of her students. An extensive survey covering all three aspects of clergy and premarital counseling listed above, was mailed to 150 randomly selected graduates. The perspective of the vast majority of pastors in this study is that clergy are the primary providers of premarital counseling and they believe it should be required of all engaged couples. In keeping with previous research, most of the pastors in this study claim that their seminary preparation in premarital counseling was inadequate. Less than 25 percent received a class or seminar, while about 60 percent claim to have had a unit in premarital counseling. Only about one third of the resondents were exposed to a structured premarital counseling program and the same percentage of respondents were trained to use premarital counseling assessment instruments. Since pastors continue to provide a significant link between the church and the family, there continues to be a critical need today for seminaries and theological institutions to better educate and equip them to provide effective premarital counseling ministries in their churches.
