As Ernest restores the bridge he muses taht a bridge is not perhaps the first thing a man would build, but it surely is the first thing a neighborhood would build. This musing reflects Berry's understanding that in order for a community to be healthy, connections must be enacted between all members of a membership: human, non-human, and the place itself. The three relational aspects that connect the members of community are mutuality, responsibility, and affection.
