The research consisted of a qualitative study in which five families which include a mentally handicapped child were interviewed separately to explore their experiences with God and with local churches. A forty-question church effectiveness survey, developed for the purpose of identifying effective rural churches, was mailed to the pastors of sixty-seven rural Reformed churches in northern Iowa. The research method employed was a qualitative examination that primarily utilized the focus group method.  The author identified four summary lessons from the research.  There is a considerable need among Southern Baptist churches in Illinois for clergy evaluation processes.  There are successful feedback models that look very different.  A lay-involved process is stronger because it engages the opinions of laity and encourages teamwork.
