Many pastors leave their place of ministry before they reach their most productive years. Much of the effort to develop ways to sustain effective ministry focuses on the pastor. This study has focused on the spouse of the pastor. The particular focus of this study has been on the phenomenon of the expectations surrounding the pastor usually known as the role of 'pastor's wife'. This present study took advantage of an opportunity to access the data from the Pastor's Summit which was a qualitative research study funding by a grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. Through this present study it was learned that much can be learned about the phenomenon of the role of 'pastor's wife' through the study of systems theory. Those who find themselves in the role of 'pastor's wife' can also benefit from resources relating to family of origin, emotional intelligence, as well as how to identify safe people and develop healthy relationships. Knowing the relationship between marriage and ministry was also discovered to be very important for ministry couples."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131334457950208,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:45:50.983Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:31:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:38:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"68b97491-0935-4cb3-a3c5-80376ffee8f7","accessControl_ssim":["877ddcfe-f33a-475c-a6d4-2e68d60d9e9d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Christ-centered preaching from Old Testament narratives"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:31:26Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:12:04Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0764518e-5e0e-45b5-92d3-accc489da569"],"hasLease_ssim":["17f9b238-c98c-4fcd-9d65-16a059802c28"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["W Brian Aucker"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Mark C Livingston"],"keyword_tesim":["Jesus Christ--Relation to Old Testament"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bible--Homiletic use","Jesus Christ"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Old Testament preaching is lacking in the following ways: most pastors are not doing it, or most pastors are doing it in the wrong way. Pastors fail to preach the Old Testament because it has cultural, linguistic, and hermeneutical challenges. Pastors preach it incorrectly when they fail to connect it with Christ. The purpose of this study was to understand the Old Testament sermon preparation process employed by pastors who preach Christ-centered sermons. Christ-centered Old Testament preaching is often neglected, and therefore the subject is relevant to every Christian preacher of God's word, and by extension to all congregations. This study employed a qualitative design using a semi-structured interview process with six preachers from various Presbyterian and Baptist denominations. The findings of this study revealed the need for a clear understanding of the Biblical Theology, a Christ-centered conviction concerning the Old Testament, diligent study from the pastor, the use of study aids, a covenanal framework, and a desire to connect the original message with today's congregations."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130907636137984,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:39:03.933Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:31:26Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:41:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7c25763c-eda0-4ae6-a33a-20dbc166b52b","accessControl_ssim":["949a4d5f-b980-4842-a2c7-ec56acbc9bc0"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Water over the bridge: exploring the connections in W Berry's vision of community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:31:25Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:47:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9f820cf5-bfcb-4d8d-bdbc-f61dd49324a4"],"hasLease_ssim":["fc400ae1-dbe2-44fd-ac60-831b676ac4ba"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Donald Gutherie"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Daniel K Chinn"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Social ethics","Community--Religious aspects--Christianity","Christian ethics","Berry, Wendell, 1934-","Good works (Theology)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In Wendell Berry's novel A place on Earth, his fictitious character, Ernest Finley, is hired to rebuild a footbridge destroyed by flood waters. This musing reflects Berry's understanding that in order for a community to be healthy, connections must be enacted between all members of a membership: human, non-human, and the place itself. The three relational aspects that connect the members of community are mutuality, responsibility, and affection. A major portion of the paper asserts the importance of holistic spirituality, relational systems, and an adaptive leadership approach as necessary for effective leadership."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131552268156928,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:49:18.703Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:39:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:34:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"28ebf59d-7336-447c-82a1-2a8dde947e4e","accessControl_ssim":["a920506d-662b-44ad-98fd-302f47611d4e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Speaking of delivery: an examination of the processes leading through sermon delivery"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:39:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:19:45Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["822fe479-2dde-4cd2-8a5d-ce0348c2eaea"],"hasLease_ssim":["3a1b1d73-c430-49e2-869e-df9b9fa06c8e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Jimmy Agan"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Andrew Scott Vander Maas"],"keyword_tesim":["Preaching, Reformed"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary (St. Louis, MO)"],"subject_tesim":["Public speaking","Preaching--Study and teaching","Sermon preparation"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to understand the attitudes and practices of preachers from a theologically Reformed background toward the use of writing in the preparation and delivery of sermons. The study used a narrative questionnaire of nearly one hundred Reformed pastors throughout the United States and semi-structured interviews with four additional pastors preaching from within a Reformed theological understanding. The study revealed a heavy reliance on writing in both the preparation and delivery of sermons. It found that both pastors and congregants deeply care about sermon delivery. Multiple approaches to this practice were uncovered, influenced by the preacher's habit, personality, theological beliefs, and training. A high percentage of pastors lacked training in sermon delivery. The study concluded that pastors in the Reformed tradition spend much more time thinking about sermon preparation than delivery, despite their frustration with their sermon delivery."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130635040980992,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:34:43.967Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:39:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:45:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"affff921-8d5b-4e8b-b998-738b00b0a300","accessControl_ssim":["4eb7fcfd-fb86-4cb1-977b-4de49e234ed9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Strategies for multi-site ministry in the United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:39:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:12:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7a58c4f5-cd7b-4300-82eb-8b9d15bd812b"],"hasLease_ssim":["7ee3e87e-b793-47f2-a4c3-761e7900dd4b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["H Harrison Spitler"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Neil C Epler"],"keyword_tesim":["Local church mergers"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary (St. Louis, MO)"],"subject_tesim":["Organizational change","Congregations","Evangelistic work","Methodist Church","Church management","Church renewal--Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to examine how multi-site ministry is being done in United Methodist churches. The study looked at three models being used by United Methodist churches for multi-site ministry: purchase and build, church merger, and existing space/rental. The study used semi-structured interviews with focus groups from three multi-site United Methodist churches. The study focused on the decision making process in becoming a multi-site church, the transitioning process from a single to multi-site church, the experience of being a multi-site church, and the relationship to the United Methodist hierarchy. The study found that most churches do not start with the intention of becoming a multi-site church, but are influenced by various factors, including some type of crisis, a strong evangelistic emphasis, or a powerful vision. Regarding the transition process, the study found that a sufficient amount of time and careful planning were necessary for success. Key factors were a realistic understanding of the difficulties, the importance of leadership, communication within the congregation and outside, effective advertising, and the use of missioners. The study found that there were struggles as well as benefits in the practice of multi-site ministry. Leadership and leadership development were important factors. Benefits included reaching different demographics and providing variety in worship and ministry styles. Struggles included relating to other churches of the same denomination, dealing with finances, and maintaining a sense of unity. Regarding the relationship with the hierarchy, the study found little information. Most churches experienced minimal help or contact with church officials except in cases of conflict with other churches. There was often misunderstanding with the multi-site model. Greater participation by district superintendents and bishops could be expected with the merger model. The study concluded that multi-site ministry is one effective way that United Methodist churches can expand their ministry and outreach."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131326267523072,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:45:43.172Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:39:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:39:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6cfd460d-fa2b-4ff9-a398-8186d3347b04","accessControl_ssim":["fdd9a3d4-f443-4737-939a-3e5618b904f5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The place of the Ten Commandments in the Church of God pulpit"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:39:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:19:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["74d4dd63-6afc-4098-80a4-633d30d2bca3"],"hasLease_ssim":["bd37eaf6-ebde-442b-b16d-3c84f2c8a114"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Philip D Douglass"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Matthew A Taylor"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary (St. Louis, MO)"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Expository preaching","Social aspects","Evangelicalism","Bible--Homiletic use","Ten commandments","Preaching","Christian life","Christianity and culture","Church of God (Anderson, Ind)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study is to explore the extent to which Church of God preachers use the Ten Commandments to address their socio-political and ecclesiastical contexts. What may appear to some as a crisis of ambiguity about the nature and place of the Ten Commandments in the public and religious spheres in America could be regarded as an opportunity for clarity on the part of preachers. The study addresses the need for Church of God preachers to engage in cultural dialogue through a fresh preaching of the Ten Commandments. The literature review surveys scholarly works regarding the context and meaning of the Decalogue in the Old and New Testaments, the meaning of the Commandments in light of a corrosive postmodern value system, and views of scholars and preachers regarding how to preach the Ten Commandments. The study included interviews with six Church of God Movement preachers, with the goal of learning about their experences related to the place of the Decalogue in the pulpit. The study asked how the preachers handled the Decalogue, exposited the Commandments, and trained congregations in discipleship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130950545965056,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:39:44.856Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":246,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
