Some varied from one model to the next, in an endless search. Others have been frustrated and are disappointed with the possibility of healthy growth. This is the reality of many churches regarding small group models. What will help churches to develop healthy small groups is a comprehensive understanding of the topic, from some essential perspectives. The objective of the research was to identify criteria that would guide the Second Baptist Church of Macaé to build a new model of small group ministry suited to its reality and needs. The literature review pointed to six hypotheses of guiding criteria. From in-depth interviews with eight pastors and church leaders with strong small-group ministries, the hypotheses were confirmed. Using the case study method, three churches that have successfully overcome obstacles to develop an ongoing rhythm of planting daughter churches will be analyzed through interviews and surveys. Five hypotheses guided this study: people from the mother church leave to plant the new church; church planters have a relationship with the mother church before starting a new church; daughter churches are planted locally in relation to the mother church; daughter churches are financially supported by the mother church for a period of time; and the people from the daughter church fully support the church planter. The hypotheses were supported by the literature and case study. As a result of these case studies, seven principles surfaced. The first principle is finding the 'right' person. Without the 'right' person, the rest of the principles do not matter. Principle number two is assessment, which verifies that he, is indeed the 'right' person for the job. Principle number three is the five percent rule: every new church that is planted will give five percent of its offerings to an escrow account for a minimum of three years. This is where the money comes from to plant new churches. Principle number four is partnering for the purpose of sharing resources. Principle number five is that a church plant becomes a fully functional church on its launch day, which allows the bookkeeping systems of the church to include paying the salary of the church planter from day one. Principle number six is raising support, which takes the pressure off the church planter to raise his full salary. Principle seven is networking, which makes partnering easier and contributes to the nonfinancial support of the planters. A survey was designed to collect data on various church planting organizations including local churches, denominations, regional judicatories and para-church church planting organizations. The survey was distributed at the Exponential '08 church planting conference which was sponsored by the Church Planting Network. The literary review surveys some of the key literature concerning church planting, some of the most critical literature concerning coaching, and the literature specifically geared towards the coaching of church planters. The research procedure defines the case study interview questions and church planter surveys used to prove the hypothesis. They are: vision, staff, lay leaders and core volunteers, finances, location and facility, ministries, technology and equipment, governance and operations structures. Nine churches that have successfully launched multi-sites were selected as field participants.  A developed survey was administered to the participants and the results analyzed to validate or invalidate the hypothesis. Este trabajo busca demostrar la hipótesis de que los rasgos o características de un plantador de igesias efectivo pueden descubrirse y analizarse para su aplicación; por lo tanto, el estudio de las características de estos tres plantadores de iglesias revelará principios transferibles que pueden ser aplicados al ministerio de plantación de iglesias de otras personas. Con el propósito de probar la hipótesis y responder a la pregunta, el investigador hizo lo siguiente: seleccionar para este estudio de casos a tres reconocidos plantadores de iglesias que han estad trabajando por mucho tiempo con gente hispana en lost Estados Unidos. The major research hypothesis underscoring the project was that establishing a local church was dependent upon circumstantial and controllable variables.  Circumstantial variables were any factor outside the influence or control of the church planter.  Controllable variables were any factor within the influence or control of the church planter.  These two key concepts (i.e. circumstantial and controllable variables) were the foundation stones upon which the research project collected, recorded, analyzed, concluded, and drew practical points of ministry application. Furthermore, a comprehensive review of church planting literature identified a framework for analyzing circumstantial and controllable variables, and a survey of the church members identified, clarified, and quantified additional information relevant to a case study approach.
