A large number of Lutherans were interviewed and tested as to their knowledge and attitude toward tithing and stewardship.  After an examination of the materials in terms of the historical context, with an emphasis on Luther's scholarship, conclusions were presented and a retreat was designed. It is the doctrine which grew out of Martin Luther's Reformation experience.  The author entered a study of biblical, theological, and historical and confessional foundations which would help to create a balanced Lutheran spirituality centered on both doctrine and experience.  After a study of the conceptual framework for spirituality, the author sampled the understanding and practice of the spiritual life of 10 percent of the congregation.
