The research, accomplished through mail-out questionnaires and personal interviews, also considers the impact on the counselor/client relationship of a pastoral counselor's performance of other clergy roles in a local church that sponsors a parish-based counseling ministry. Results confirmed that counselees who are active church members respond more positively to pastoral counseling than inactive or unchurched counselees.  However, the performance of other clergy roles by the counselor did not have a negative effect on the counseling process. An effort to build a trust relationship had to begin.  To accomplish this, the congregation had to understand the pastor in certain images. These images, servant, child, friend, and partner, would be topics of sermons describing the congregation and pastor. This understanding would assure the acceptance of pastor and congregation.  The enlistment of a small response group of church members and a spiritual mentor proved to be helpful.
