The response to the cry for justice which the denomination answered with its founding has been overshadowed by members’ individual pursuits of personal piety. Through surveys and interviews, this project assessed congregational practices in six local churches. In this project, the author proposes that reimagining call and response in preaching as an ongoing sermon conversation advances discipleship in the congregation. The congregation begins the dialogue with the preacher prior to the development of the sermon; participates in traditional call and response during the sermon, and continues the conversation after the sermon is preached. Pastors need to integrate preaching into their own Christian discipleship in order for preaching to have an impact on their congregation. Through this project I propose that preaching can enhance the Christian discipleship of the pastor through the use of Incarnational Exegesis, EPIC, Authentic and Integrated Preaching. The committee first explores the meaning of church membership based on an understanding of ekklesia and the body of Christ metaphor, a theology of discipleship related to baptism, and a systems view of the congregation, in order to design and lead the class. It incorporated learnings from Evangelism Explosion, Walk to Emmaus, and a previous discipling model.  Evaluation indicated that disciple-making contributed to personal growth in evangelism and discipleship.
