Reaching the younger generations will require a more personal approach than new programs and events. Overcoming skepticism and distrust are key factors in reaching the younger generations. The Five Thresholds Model will increase the confidence of young adults in the overall practice of evangelizing and, more specifically, in the practices of sharing their faith and inviting others to respond. The location of the work was two Black churches in the North Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church and included preaching a variety of sermons, followed by congregational research on the influence of the sermons on church growth. Through this project, the thesis on which this work was based, that church growth was a direct result of good preaching, changed to recognize that while preaching alone does not cause church growth, it is one of many significant factors in the decision to join a church. This decline is causing many pastors and churches to have concerns about the future survival of their ministries. There are many reasons given by church statisticians and church growth gurus for this decline. One of the problems can be traced to the generational divide that exists in many congregations between the seniors and those of younger age groups. This thesis offers strategies to use prophetic preaching as a tool to bridge the generation gap. The preacher has to be willing to be intentionally intergenerational in their approach to ministry and in the preparation and delivery of sermons. However, many across the leadership of the church increasingly agree that because of the decline of mainline protestant churches for well over fifty years, we still use an old paradigm that focuses too much on counting people in the pews and money in the offering plates and rather than the whole panoply of the aspects of disciple-making. It was based on a theology of church as body of Christ and ministry as the priesthood of all believers, a historical study of Wesley's class meetings, and an integral model of ministry. A project of congregational assessment was used to enable an urban congregation with declining membership to be engaged in evangelization.
