Current trends, such as shorter hospital stays and pastoral staff reductions, impede such ministry.  Seven brochures entitled 'The Search,' 'Faith,' 'Hope,' 'Love,' 'Emotions,' 'Waiting' and 'Power' were developed to facilitate patients' spiritual growth during hospitalization.  The brochures, grounded in narrative and process theology, encourage patients to make their illness experiences part of their faith story.  Their value was tested and affirmed through written surveys completed by former patients and others. It was grounded in the Genesis pericope in which Jacob wrestled with the ish at the Jabbok, which set cardiac crisis in the context of a life-and-death confrontation. Evaluation utilized a 'purpose in life' test given to a treatment group after participating in rehabilitation using pastoral intervention, and to a control group who had not experienced cardiac crisis.
