The committee first explores the meaning of church membership based on an understanding of ekklesia and the body of Christ metaphor, a theology of discipleship related to baptism, and a systems view of the congregation, in order to design and lead the class. Seeking to develop a structure that is consistent with shared theological and ethical beliefs in equality, justice, mutuality, diversity, and community, the group members aim to engage in the process, make decisions by consensus, accept diversity, accept rersponsibility for group participation and process, and to become more self-revealing. The power equity group model works for small groups whose members have interest in and energy for process and are capable of personal insight. To overcome this problem, a newcomer assimilation curriculum was developed, based on biblical understanding of a searching God, Jesus as teacher, and the apostles as guides to new life, theological principles gained from the history of religious education, and systems theory. It was carried out in Mokdong Methodist Church for three months. Current trends, such as shorter hospital stays and pastoral staff reductions, impede such ministry.  Seven brochures entitled 'The Search,' 'Faith,' 'Hope,' 'Love,' 'Emotions,' 'Waiting' and 'Power' were developed to facilitate patients' spiritual growth during hospitalization.  The brochures, grounded in narrative and process theology, encourage patients to make their illness experiences part of their faith story.  Their value was tested and affirmed through written surveys completed by former patients and others. The project is theologically grounded on the church as body of Christ and people of God and continuing Christ's ministry as diakonia. Using input about their personal issues, the role of God, and faith development, from both current adolescents at Crossroad and the staff who work with them, the project identifies the most pressing issues for these young people.  The discussion series addresses the concerns with residents who chose to attend.  The effectiveness of the project is measured by pre- and post-interviews with participating adolescents; by an ongoing diary of conversations; and by feedback from the residents and staff at Crossroad. Through semi-structured interviews, respondents reported less overt homophobia in AAPC than heterosexism. Data obtained suggests the presence of the negative effects of heterosexism on collegial relationships, pastoral counselor training, and the membership process.  Overt homophobia was experienced within local agencies affiliated with AAPC and in the institutional church.
