The Army leadership perceived suicide prevention training as a means of dealing with the problem.  The Army Chaplaincy is selected as the proponent of suicide prevention training.  Since human life is a precious gift of God and suicide is an irrational act, suicide prevention is a life-saving ministry. A smooth transition prevents unnecessary anxiety and mistakes.  The Installation Staff Chaplain and his staff are crucial to the process.  By sharing knowledge and experience they enhance the newly assigned chaplain's self-confidence, effectiveness, and early success.  The author's research includes twenty-two years experience on active duty as well as the study of books, pamphlets, articles, Air Force regulations, retreats, workshops, chaplain board materials, commander's presentations, lay and clergy group meetings.  Careful guidance gives the new chaplain an opportunity to develop his or her intrinsic value. The project consisted of ministry during a Western Pacific Deployment aboard USS Shiloh (CG-67) from August 17, 2000, until February 17, 2001. The project leader developed a program consisting of worship, religious education, community outreach, counseling, and deck-plate ministry for a mixed gendered crew that consisted of 430 sailors, chief petty officers, and commissioned officers. As a result, the crew experienced the free exercise of religion and a community of sharing.
