Research was conducted on the topics of self-care and burnout. An examination of the Gospels had as a goal finding a model of self-care in Jesus' life. An attempt was made to reconcile the command to 'deny self' and 'to love your neighbor as yourself'. A course involving self-care techniques and examples from the life of Jesus was developed and taught to seventeen laity. The project was conducted in March of 2007. The parents were provided syllabi and participated in three teaching sessions, enjoyed a catered lunch, and concluded the workshop with an extended time for questions and answers. Follow-up support groups met for the three consecutive Sunday evenings.  The seminar addressed cognitive, skill-development, and affective issues centered on the issues of childrearing. Project objectives center in 'active listening' and 'I' messages undergirded by two biblical principles.  Eight training sessions, two hours per session, are conducted during a period of two months with five couples participating.  Subjective and objective evaluations are conducted. 'Active listening' becomes established practice for nine of ten participants. Attitude change allows participants to listen with empathy and respond without judgement or criticism. The major method of study and research was a personal in-depth study of scripture.  The results of the project were twofold.  First, it was established that a need exists for such a workshop within the ministry framework of the local church. A self-evaluating testing instrument, responded to by the participants in the first and last sessions, measured their growth in confidence as pastoral counselors.
