The motivation for the project grew out of the realization that the Downtown Phoenix Church needed a framework to help them establish and build relationships with the growing gay community in the downtown area. It stems from generations of Confucianism infusing culture and idolizing this image as mature and dignified for aging adults.  With the expansion of human life span where four generation families are no longer a novelty, there could soon be families with more people expecting to be served than available hands to serve. Mental health providers are developing treatment plans.  Yet chaplains and other faith leaders also specialize in guilt, shame, and forgiveness.  The writer proposed that veterans--through a series of small group meetings--could learn more about God's love, acceptance, and forgiveness, and as a result begin to forgive themselves. The project involved recruiting a team, training the team in evangelism, identifying and meeting community needs, building relationships with unsaved persons in the church's neighborhood, and presenting the gospel as opporunity arose. This project assessed and addressed the risk of compassion fatigue.  Counselors were taught the definition for and characteristics of compassion fatigue and given an assessment to measure the risk.  Six counselors were selected, based on their assessment scores, to participate in an eight-week project.  Participants discovered how the symptoms of compassion fatigue impacted their spiritual, emotional, physical and psychological well-being.
