Creating sermon-based small groups to reinforce sermons enhances biblical discipleship and produces life change. Such groups help people grow spiritually in a complex world that communicates many ideas. Chapter one raises the possibility that resurfacing the sermon's main idea and desired application in a discussion group can extend the purpose of the sermon. Chapter two provides a theological foundation for the role of the pastor as preacher and the use of small groups. Chapter three provides analysis from ten churches interviewed to discover reasons why sermon-based small groups work, providing a best practices list, specific challenges and how to overcome them, and principles for writing curriculum. The research focused on studying adolescent development, leadership, learning styles, and curricular design through analyzing four curricula currently in use with adolescents.  The research was evaluative in nature.  Data were collected through sixty-minute phone interviews and by developing an evaluative grid from literary research.  The grid provided a consistent process to analyze the curricula.  Leadership with adolescents is either strongly emphasized or ignored in the evangelical Christian church.  Teens are seen as a resource and should be placed in positions to make an impact today, according to the collected data.  A strong philosophical base of adolescent development theory, leadership theory, or learning styles theory did not exist in the models. All the approaches incorporated theoretical pieces within the areas of study. There was a lack of consideration for teen maturation needs when presenting the information.  Social support was not integrated into the fiber of the programs. Shiloh is an old, traditional, southern black Baptist institution whose historical prominence emerged because of her dynamic Christian education ministry, of which Sunday School had dwindled to nil.  Eager to revitalize the Christian education ministry and energize the persons of auxiliaries and ministry leaders, the pastor petitioned to boost a dying ministry.  An initiative involving all church leaders was launched to address the Christian education needs of Shiloh.  The timeline for this project was originally six weeks, but developed into an additional seven weeks to more effectively meet the objectives of the project.  Phase I of the project focused on assessing the Christian education ministry, defining roles and leadership training. Phase II specifically concentrated on Sunday School teacher training centered on biblical background knowledge, Christian doctrine, teaching methods and addressed a variety of learning styles. A biblical, theological summary of discipleship precedes information regarding discipleship processes through Training Network International (T-Net).  Bolman and Deal's organizational frames help evaluate Southern Baptist discipleship materials and T-Net.  Survery results from Southern Baptist, T-Net-participating church members in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina show T'Net's impact on discipleship involvement and vitality.  There is interview data from twelve church leaders, detail on Culpeper (va.) Baptist Church's T-Net implementation, and an interview with Southern Baptist discipleship leader, Roy T. This thesis attempts to make those concepts easier for the student to remember and apply. It also provides teaching strategies and goals for the teacher. The thesis uses an indicative approach to teaching rather than a deductive approach. It also uses The Systematic Design of Instruction, by Walter Dick and Lou Carey, for teaching to offer exact goals and measurable objectives.
