There appears to be a catalytic relationship between spiritual conversations and the spiritual health of church leaders. To ascertain the impact of spiritual direction upon the church leader's spiritual formation, sixteen pastors and program staff received monthly spiritual direction for twelve months. Ministries that could last several years end up lasting just a few years due to unmet expectations and the inability to resolve conflict. In this work, the author contends that long-term ministry is valuable. Ministries lasting ten years or more are normally based on mutual trust between pastor and congregation. The depth of relationship brings trust and stability to a church unknown in shorter pastorates. The literature supports this in both religious and secular fields. Those entering ministry need to be well prepared for the rigors of relationship building, making themselves vulnerable and open, while still maintaining a level of trust and professionalism. The Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches is comprised of over 500 churches and is benefiting greatly from the dedicated service of pastors who are daring to pay the price of long-term service. Their insights were a primary source of research in determining what relational factors are paramount in the building of a marathon ministry. Consulted also were the executive and regional ministers who from their perspectives add much as they consult with search committees, pastors, and congregations in crisis. They serve on the front lines of ministry and understand well the pressures that go along with building a significant relational ministry. Several theological themes were discussed under the heading of the struggle between the sin-led life and the Spirit-led life. Such subjects as submission, partnership, and shepherding were viewed through these lenses. This aided greatly in discerning the primary issues facing churches and pastors as they pursue significant ministry together. As a result of the research, this study should assist the CABC in ministering more effectively to its pastors and churches, most specifically in the recommendations to search committees and in providing guidelines to pastors and leadership boards in careful and proper treatment of each other."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131376041328640,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:46:30.640Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:11:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:04:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d3c8f7ae-9575-4c01-ade3-284db6b5574e","accessControl_ssim":["6cec0f67-8fd5-42f8-9680-d910f26654c6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Silent submission: a reformed path toward integrative leadership"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:11:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:10:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b70f825e-ffa0-4ea8-80fa-09214a96882a"],"hasLease_ssim":["bcf0c5a7-d3e6-451c-b33a-90bd97381726"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Wayne Goodwin"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert L Jordon"],"keyword_tesim":["Spiritual disciplines"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Religious life","Quietude"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This work studies the opportunity afforded evangelical and Reformed church leaders through the spiritual disciplines of silence and solitude. There is a problem in the personal lives of contemporary ministers, which surfaces in the forms of addiction, burnout, infidelity, and such. At the root of the problem is a need for spiritual intimacy. This need merits an investigation and reflection on spiritual intimacy: definition of, challenges to, and a model for. The thesis of this study is that the beloved disciple is an appropriate model for the spiritual intimacy of pastors. The project tested the validity and application of the thesis through selected interviews of pastors. The method of research consisted of investigating the epithet the beloved disciple and the pericopes outlining his mentions in the text. In addition, other literary sources were consulted to determine the dynamics of Christian spirituality and the psychology of intimacy. The project engaged fifteen pastors--seven active and eight inactive--in a spiritual intimacy interview.
