This thesis explores the possibility that James may have intended his readers to recognize both historical and eschatological imagery associated with the biblical prophet. First, it shows that in early Jewish literature the eschatological and historical Elijah traditions were not held in isolation of each other. Imagery from descriptions of Elijah’s eschatological return is used to describe the pre-ascension ministry of the prophet, while the eschatological mission of the prophet is described using elements of the historical narrative. Second, the thesis demonstrates that James’ prescript “to the twelve tribes of the Dispersion,” sets a tone of inaugurated and yet-to-be-consumated eschatology, and that the mention of Elijah helps form an eschatological inclusio that frames the letter. Third, the New Testament use use of Elijah’s drought outside of James is explored showing again that elements from the Elijah’s drought in 1 Kings were used in eschatological contexts, and that Elijah’s three and a half year drought, as mentioned by James, is used to illustrate a period of judgment for the sake of effecting repentance in these contexts. Fourth and finally, the images of rain and drought are viewed through an eschatological lens, revealing their role as covenant blessing and curse, and eschatological judgment and restoration. It is concluded that James’ readers could have recognized the eschatological implications of using Elijah as an example of faithful, righteous prayer, and that James assigns his readers a role similar to that of the eschatological prophet. They are called to endure in the midst of eschatological trials and to effect repentance before the arrival of the soon-coming King."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://archive.org/details/2007DarlackJames"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132346507853824,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:01:56.149Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:25:19Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:43:17Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6bf8cdc7-86ce-45c3-bc39-3492a920c2f7","accessControl_ssim":["0876d65e-20a8-44a7-954f-a853a0006f78"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Prayer agreement: a strategy for multigenerational health and growth"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:25:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:17:25Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b061a17a-df14-40b9-badc-4cda879af595"],"hasLease_ssim":["04e1a370-9813-4336-bfad-1021addff21b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Haddon W Robinson"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gideon A Thompson"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Mission statements","Big churches","Church growth","Prayer"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Gideon Thompson researched the principles supporting multigenerational local church health and growth and concluded -- the missing link is prayer agreement. It is concerned with questions having to do with the discipline of prayer in the spiritual development of Christians. A primary premise of the work is that greater practice of prayer and a more disciplined prayer life will aid and encourage spiritual growth. The author suggests that many followers of Jesus Christ are not utilizing the great gift of prayer in their lives. The study attempts to correlate greater participation in prayer and the spiritual development of the one who is praying. Further, there is an attempt to assess at what point the participants believed that there was a 'diminishing return' to their prayer life, i.e., how much time dedicated to prayer is enough each day. Further, there is an attempt to correlate increased activity of prayer and the spiritual revitalization of an entire congregation. The thesis begins with theological reflection on the nature and value of prayer. The work moves on to an historical analysis of the Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church, followed by a review of the literature pertinent to the subject. The project design is discussed, and the outcomes of the project are noted.
