I designed and ran a pilot workshop for high-school students in home-based education, with a goal of offering training in boundaries, skills, and habits that allow for positive interaction with popular electronic media. A study of the biblical motif of sojourners and exiles provides a theological framework against which different models of Church and Culture are compared. It is found that Christians, as sojourners and exiles, embrace an alternative identity as the People of God, yet function as bona fide participants in their broader cultures, through which the missio dei is advanced. A robust eschatology prepares the Christian to navigate the inherent tensions and difficulties. A study of many efforts at formation around media identify three strategic categories into which these efforts fit, namely cultural abstinence, cultural conversation, and faith-formative practices performed within the Christian community. An eight-week media workshop was designed as a synthesis of these different practices, with focus on a Media Rule of Life, five skills of cultural conversation, and five corresponding spiritual practices. From the results of this pilot course, recommendations are made for development of future media formation approaches."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://archive.org/details/2019BarryBrian"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132390913998848,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:02:38.498Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:30:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:50:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"91479c1b-c2a4-4246-a6a7-a8b857cd0708","accessControl_ssim":["63d7415b-40d4-49f0-903c-7f6c6eb95559"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Role of the preacher's ethos in retaining Armenian evangelical youth"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:30:02Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:23:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2c342b10-a702-49a6-baaa-afa31729b18c"],"hasLease_ssim":["76a46d6e-264d-4689-83f0-b799644edc1d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Jeffrey Arthurs"],"year_tesim":["2011"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ara D Jizmejian"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Armenian Evangelical Union of North America","Clergy","Clergy--Office","Laity","Youth--Religious life","Church work with youth","Social role"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this thesis is to explore the relationship between the ethos of Armenian Evangelical Union preachers and the disconnection of youth from Armenian evangelical churches in North America. The research focused on studying adolescent development, leadership, learning styles, and curricular design through analyzing four curricula currently in use with adolescents. The research was evaluative in nature. Data were collected through sixty-minute phone interviews and by developing an evaluative grid from literary research. The grid provided a consistent process to analyze the curricula. Leadership with adolescents is either strongly emphasized or ignored in the evangelical Christian church. Teens are seen as a resource and should be placed in positions to make an impact today, according to the collected data. A strong philosophical base of adolescent development theory, leadership theory, or learning styles theory did not exist in the models. All the approaches incorporated theoretical pieces within the areas of study. There was a lack of consideration for teen maturation needs when presenting the information. Social support was not integrated into the fiber of the programs. It is concerned with the question of what were the elements that brought about this youth revival and what caused its decline. Then with this information, and given the current state of youth ministry in Boston, what would it take for another city wide youth ministry to happen again? A primary premise of the work is a historic review using a systems thinking approach. Systems analysis provided a view of the interrelated elements of an otherwise complex setting between Modernity and Postmodernity, Urban and Suburban youth, Traditional Boston Churches and the Coming Together Youth led movement. Secondly, this study discusses the various models of congregational life cycles to tell the story in eight stages of the rise and decline of the C2 movement. The primary research project of this work was using the Hexagon technique for developing systems analysis of particular environments. Using this method, this study was able to determine the five principles of the C2. The five principles of Coming Together are: 1. C2 is a movement responding to the dynamic work of the Holy Spirit in youth. 2. C2 is a Christian Youth led movement. 3. C2 utilizes a team approach in sharing, of leadership, vision and resources. 4. C2 seeks to build and celebrate Christ-centered, interracial relationships among urban and suburban youth groups. 5. C2 seeks to provide a supportive network of adult youth leaders. This study then analyzed these principles through the grid of systems thinking and developed a causal loop diagram for further analysis. In this diagram it was discovered how the C2 was a system of reinforcing elements that once placed in motion would become productive. This analysis also demonstrated that the reinforcing aspect for the C2 system could become counter-productive if any change occurred in one of the principles. Next this study analyzed the current state of youth ministry in Boston, what has to happen to bring forth a city-wide youth ministry through systems analysis Hexagon project with current youth ministers in Boston. Through the development of another causal loop diagram of this question, the leverage points for effecting change in the current system of youth work in Boston was determined. This study proposes that the five principles of C2 could still be an effective leverage to bring about city-wide ministry. Although the form of this youth ministry would be different base upon a new generation of youth in a changing context. It was also suggested that these principles are transferable to other settings, although the programmatic outcomes would be different according to the environment. The final outcome of the life cycle study of C2 is found that out of the death of the movement came to the resurrection of a multiplication of new and vibrant youth programs. A key learning from C2 study is best summarized by the words of Jesus when he said, 'I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds,' (John 12:24)."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129943077289984,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:23:44.059Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:51:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:33:19Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3c397a95-e001-454f-aafc-0b322f6e6e3e","accessControl_ssim":["46f3dc3e-7a7b-4cba-8bcf-2ea3e9f11eef"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Connecting postmodern Hispanic teenagers to the church: principles and strategies for reaching and keeping high school kids in the community of faith"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:51:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:52:29Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2128223e-96bf-40d1-b3f2-a6f16bbb1f5d"],"hasLease_ssim":["953220c2-7249-4d5a-9685-1b41fc3af3a4"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Gary A Parrett"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Roger P Felipe"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Postmodernism","Youth--Religious life","Church work with youth","Hispanic American youth"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This work is an inquiry into the philosophy of postmodernism and the postmodern youth culture. It analyzes ways in which the postmodern worldview is reflected in the religious and cultural value system of Latino celebrities and writers, as well as in the lives of high school students in Miami, Florida. A questionnaire of one hundred twenty-four students and a personal interview with seven Hispanic students reveal an emerging postmodern worldview among Hispanic teenagers both in and outside of the church. Principles of spiritual formation and strategies for reaching Hispanic students are discussed in light of ministry in a postmodern world."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130549785460736,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:33:22.661Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":6,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
