The writer decided to conduct a study that would center on the sharing of testimonies or spiritual journeys by a select sample of prisoners. For twelve weeks, 20 African-American men--10 Christians and 10 Muslims--poured their hearts out and shared their experiences of spiritual transformation, not only as individuals but also as persons of faith.  The African American experience revealed that Islam has better served incarcerated persons than the Black church.  The reasons are: 1. Islam has been more visibly available both inside and outside the prison. 2. Islam provides protection and community life. 3. It developed out of the pastor's and the church's reflection of their theological understanding of the church and its mission. Informed by that understanding, a preliminary investigation of the status of the First Baptist Church School was undertaken.  The staff and pastor moved to develop a healthier church school.  Out of an intentional and interactive agenda came goals that were acted out in the church school's ministry.
