Many nonprofit organizations are continuing this trend in an attempt to address financial needs, explore new opportunities and consolidate service in overlapping markets. This project examines the initial steps of the merger process of two United Methodist Churches within the Western North Carolina Conference. Research was conducted through a combination of questionnaires and personal interviews with pastors within the Gastonia district.  Additionally, interviews were conducted with persons in various positions of responsibility within conference hierarchy. The resulting recommendations for the local church, the annual conference and the pastor are intended to enhance the pastor's health and ability to continue in relationship with the congregation. It outlined a pilot mentoring program called Residency in Ministry Program aimed at strengthening the African American Churches in the WNCC. The research was selective, and it considered the initial interracial evangelistic emphasis of American Methodism's Wesleyan heritage. Thru the utilization of the individual evaluation tools of surveys and interviews this study identified eight ways of increasing committee effectiveness through developing a greater cohesiveness within Vickrey's committee structure and nine ways of avoiding committee ineffectiveness by limiting many of Vickrey's current dysfunctional It shows how a congregation diseased with the virus of chaos, conflict and controversy over many years moved to become a semblance of spiritual resourcefulness, a center of health where congregants demonstrate maturity and contribute to healing and wholeness. The project shows that this happened via a Christ-centered model wherein the total congregation became involved in the leadership of the church. Industries failed More church members were dying than new members joining. We formed a grief ministry to care for the church and community families. When death comes, the church now has a ministry offering God's grace, hope, and assurance of resurrection to the church and town.
