An analysis was done of the practice in Nebraska from 2000 to 2009. The knowledge and skill sets required by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church nationally were also analyzed. The current Nebraska practices and the national sets recommended were compared to best practice as seen in entry level seminary preaching courses. The preacher needs to analyze the ministerial context and invite the congregation to share their concerns, interests and questions about preaching. It suggests that the preacher should withdraw his/her controlling power over the congregation so that the laity can work together with the preacher by sharing the ministry, including preaching.
