What might the preacher learn from paying close attention to his or her own past and current surroundings? What stories do locale, landscape, history, and even building structure of a congregation have to tell? Research gathered from three ELCA Lutheran congregations, interviews of parishioners, and insight gathered from books written by environmental psychologists and preachers informed the writing of this thesis. It is recommended that preachers make five strategic shifts: from performance to participation, from authoritarian to authentic, from isolated to integrated, from verbal to visual, and from stabilization to subversion.
