The project design for the dissertation included nine steps: (1) Sending questionnaires to the seminary directors of field education belonging to the Association for Theological Field Education. This produced data about field education supervisors, training of supervisors, and determined specifically what films, if any, were presently available for this purpose. (2) Conducting research at the Library of Congress regarding the availability of films on pastoral supervision. (3) Surveying Association for Clinical Pastoral Education members for possible audio-visual resources. (4) Making visitation to seminaries where significant pastoral supervisor training programs were in effect. This also included the audio taping of those training programs. (5) Taking information from the author’s own training and experience, the questionnaires, the visits, and preparing a script for an orientation and training film. (6) Shooting and editing a color video film on pastoral supervisors. (7) Showing the film to a group of persons who were, or would be, pastoral supervisors. (8) Receiving and evaluating feedback from the persons viewing the film by means of a questionnaire testing instrument. In addition, the project highlights the impact of their health initiatives on the well-being of the congregants and members of the community served by the local church. Results of this project will help to define the most effective strategies for clergy in the promotion of health wellness interventions and to engage in the conversation of healthcare access and healthcare equity in their communities. The findings of this study will be presented to the Philadelphia Annual Conference of the AME Church through the Health Commission. In doing so, the ready will hopefully gain greater insight into how old ministry leadership paradigms have restricted a broader, more inclusive and baptismally faithful rendering of vocation, thereby opening up the possibility of engaging in new paradigms of church leadership. Details of motivation, inception of and planning for this Program of Training and Training Manual, its theological basis and issues, documentation, and evaluation for use, compose the contents of Part I. The acceptance and use of the Program of Training and Training Manual by the Marine Corps is an issue that will be handled separately from, and is not a part of, this project. The Program of Training and Training Manual included in Part II were composed without footnotes or references with the intent of enhancing its acceptance and use as a practical tool for ministry by Command and chaplains within the Marine Corps. The Program of Training and Training Manual are the results of personal faith and experience, academic research, professional consultation, and colleague cooperation and support. As such, the approach is unique in that nothing similar to this has been attempted, and materials and statistics within the military are either short on supply or simply not available. The method used, therefore, was based upon personal faith, commitment, experience, observation and reflection. To this added the theoretical, theological, and academic which gave shape to the Program of Training and Training Manual. The information from these questionnaires was then coded and processed through the data processing facilities of Penn State University and the University of Michigan under the supervision of Dr. Loyde Hartley of Lancaster Theological Seminary. The information gleaned from this effort has become the basis for Chapter Two, which is a discussion of where pastors are today in regards to the practice of home visitations, to endeavor to note the effects of that practice on congregational life and finally to bring together any helpful strategies they presently are using in this regard. In doing the latter, the project placed these present-day pastors in the midst of the ongoing forensic, which has been taking place in relation to the practice of home visitations over the last seventy or more years, which is the subject for discussion in Chapter One. That chapter endeavors to show that there is (and it may be that there has always been) a continuing significant undercurrent and resurgence of increased interest in this matter with the profession in recent years. Finally, Chapter Three attempts to set forth an overall strategy for home visitations, using my own approach as a kind of structure, enlarging upon and firming that design with the insights of prominent practical theologians who have written on the subject throughout the same seventy or more years mentioned above, as well as the data discussed in Chapter Two. Finally, the research recommends certain directions for continued study. However, the integration of knowledge into understanding and competency is not as straightforward. To address the challenge of integration of knowledge and competency for ministerial authorization, this project follows Richard Osmer's four tasks of practical theology and looks at the United Church of Christ's (UCC) Marks of Faithful and Effective Authorized Ministers alongside principles of competency-based assessment. The project presents a working model for UCC Committees on Ministry across the denomination for implementation of the new Manual on Ministry (MOM). The new MOM embraces a single form of authorized ministry and the use of the competency-based Marks with all ministerial candidates, seminarians, and those on alternative paths to authorization. Alongside a model for UCC Committees on Ministry, this project opens doors to further change in the UCC's process and points to possible implementation of competency-based assessment programs in other denominations. This project opens with a glossary and the state of the field in Chapter 1 leading to the research question on how the UCC might move to embrace the Marks and develop an implementation strategy for using them in a true competency-based approach. Chapter 2 includes a literature review. Chapter 3 offers a glimpse at how the education world uses competency-based assessment and offers five principles for how their use might be carried over into the assessment work of UCC Committees on Ministry. A decade of study led to a national Pronouncement on ministry issues in 2005 which suggested ways to move into the future while taking into account the remarkable diversity of faith communities within the denomination.The broad range of ecclesiologies, with their corresponding theologies of ministry, has made the denominational conversation rich, but it has also made the task of coming to consensus on ministry issues challenging. In order to gain a better understanding of our practices in preparation for creating new guidelines for authorization, one directive of the Pronouncement was to \"pay attention to our theologies of ministry in the UCC, especially ordained ministry.\"This project applies an ecclesiological typology to the descriptive language in current local and national denominational guidelines for identifying, preparing, and authorizing candidates for ministry, for the purpose of comparing the preferences which are revealed in them. Preferences are arrayed, and similarities and discrepancies between local and national materials are noted. In particular, this project observes whether or not the full range of ecclesiological diversity of the United Church of Christ is reflected in the guidelines for authorization, what differences exist between the sets of guidelines in this respect, and what the significance of those differences may be. In this project, movies have helped African American clergywomen explore and deconstruct these messages. The Midwife Leadership Style created a participant-centered environment where women became free to share even as they would if they were gathered around a kitchen table. Within the project, movies were used to stimulate dialogue and as a disseminator of educational content. It was my finding that women were able to learn to identify these messages and to gain skills that enable them to develop healthy responses. The project tests an assumption that expectations of preaching are changing, primarily because of increasing educational attainments of laypersons in African American churches.  Results of these investigations, presented in 24 tables, show that the majority of college students and laypersons agree on many questions concerning the importance of preaching.
