Using theologies on death and dying, Christian practices, as well as current books, journals, and first hand experiences, the project presents ways in which conversations on end-of-life are happening in society and in our faith communities. It also presents the deep need for these conversations to continue to take place and how we can support our faith leaders in having these conversations in our faith communities. The project proposes a workshop as a resource to help faith leaders and faith communities have general conversations on death and dying. The workshop is designed based on specific responses to surveys given to faith leaders in the Pennsylvania Southeast and Pennsylvania Northeast conferences of the United Church of Christ; interviews with 10 of these faith leaders and surveys to 5 congregations in this region. In those surveys, faith leaders identified what conversations on death and dying they have within their faith communities and also their desired resources and elements for a workshop for education in end-of-life issues and death and dying. The faith community members identified what conversations they have had in faith communities on death and dying and what information would be beneficial in future resources to support faith leaders in having conversations on end-of-life planning in their faith communities. An additional resource proposed in this project is an annotated bibliography of resources on death that faith leaders can use to increase comfort in having end-of-life conversations in their faith communities."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860328341569536,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:27:12.710Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"87d30bb3-6fc0-4e02-a901-3da466e15d24","accessControl_ssim":["53a3a357-94e6-40da-8993-f31b9151f2eb"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["From anguish to enrichment: redefining three 18th and 19th century utopian communities’ response to suffering"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c4cb27b4-014e-4617-9ba6-40b21306c054"],"hasLease_ssim":["aa2bee8b-e3f9-49ef-b844-5d0e63e42e0a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2019"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. One significant response to suffering in the last 300 years has been the formation of three utopian communities: Shakers (Ann Lee), Oneida Community (John Humphrey Noyes) and Ephrata Cloister (Conrad Beissel). To understand theologically how these communities dealt with suffering, the theology of the late German liberation theologian, Dorothee Soelle is utilized. Though unaware at the time, utopian leaders lived out Soelle’s theology of suffering and her response to it, and its communal dimension. Divorce, extended separation, moving, retirement, and a host of other factors may precipitate grief reactions. The focus of this paper, however, is on grief experienced as the result of death of a loved one, or significant other person. Such grief will be defined and clarified in psychological terms, emphasizing the importance of resolving the grief by expressing the full range of emotions associated with it. It will be shown through several case studies that unresolved grief, the inhibition of natural feelings occasioned by the death of a loved one, may be a factor in marital crises. This description is formed by viewing the data collected through an understanding of the dynamics of grief presented in the first chapter. Persons--as they relate to themselves, to one another, and to God. Persons--as they express their needs and try to meet one another's needs. Persons--as they seek to discover the meaning behind tragedy and joy, and the significance of life and death. The parish ministry has the unique opportunity and responsibility to express the love of God and the salvation of our Lord Jesus Christ to persons as they encounter the great moments of their lives--birth, baptism, confirmation, marriage, and death. The entire milieu of life is encompassed within the parish ministry and the lives of people are seen in their entirety, completeness, and wholeness. One does not specialize as one relates to people in the parish. Of necessity, the parish minister must relate to the whole person--body, mind, and spirit. Even more important, it is necessary for the minister to see himself as loved of God and as a whole person. Only then is he able to relate his and God's love to those lives which are entrusted to his care. It is an awesome responsibility, but inherent to the task is the conviction that he is doing the will of God and is seeking to show God's love to persons. This conviction enables ministry. It provides the incentive and the impetus to minister in a world that continually denies personhood and the worth of individual and collective man."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873287426015232,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:53:11.457Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:05:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:52:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bcb5bf34-725f-4c23-95de-9f8f69a6338c","accessControl_ssim":["2245a870-9dc8-411d-8025-e7c21b332b0a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Conversations at the edge of life : unmet spiritual needs"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:05:43Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:46:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d5ad8273-01ae-4b2b-b8a4-96e2cd1c787c"],"hasLease_ssim":["2cdf8801-c56b-407a-b323-079d0a19bc5f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2016"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Dying is a lonely process owing to its nature as a process each must traverse by oneself, within one's self. The pain and suffering inherently present is the most private experience, but their causes demand public accountability. Current medical practice and technology, intentionality or unintentional, serve principally to needlessly prolong the dying process without any purposeful positive impact on the underlying disease process, and resulting on the dumping of the moral responsibility for the death of the patient onto the medically and theologically unprepared familial caregivers. A continuing litany of 'Patient Satisfaction Surveys' report 'Unmet Spiritual Needs' as a principal source of patient/caregiver dissatisfaction. By the end of the twentieth century, advances in medical life-support techniques have allowed the artificial extension of human life. However, this prolonged existence may usually presents increasing incapacities at the end-of-life. Death now medicalized and delayed, dying is now riddled with unwarranted, useless, and meaningless suffering and limited to no spiritual support. Yet physicians report, 'We can always keep doing things!' The tortuous journey of dying, for both patient and caregivers, is a destabilizing maelstrom of emotional pain, psychological terror, and physical suffering. Compounding the misery of the journey is the absence of the church, of spiritual support, resulting in unmet spiritual in many patients and families. The process of dying leaves patients and caregivers with feelings of loss, darkness, and disconnection. The focus of this project discovers and reports on the unmet spiritual needs of the dying from a true spiritual perspective, previously unreported in the literature."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"identifier_tesim":["https://www.proquest.com/dissertations-theses/conversations-at-edge-life-unmet-spiritual-needs/docview/1794166970/se-2"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873263101149184,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:52:48.259Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:11:32Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:49:52Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"eb83811d-0e0d-4448-9e7e-e14d768fab94","accessControl_ssim":["6b722142-f4af-4d9d-8add-edb5afa26e9c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Grief in the loss of a pastor: implications for interim ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:11:26Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:44:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9cdfbdf5-70c9-4760-ba78-6103ebe7d99b"],"hasLease_ssim":["f11776c6-f81e-4aeb-9189-e13009c0e66c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"additional_rights_info_tesim":["Donald Freeman"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1981"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Although each church is unique in size and composition, as well as in the circumstances surrounding the pastor's departure, the common element of grief is present. Personal interviews with church leaders elicited various expressions of sadness in the loss of their pastor. With learnings related to grief resulting from death and separation, application is then made to the loss of a significant other, a pastor. Biblical and theological references are included. Recommendations for dealing with this grief during an interim period follow."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873079905484800,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:49:53.550Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
