Beginning in January of 1976 and continuing through December of 1978, this experimental ministry took place with the inactive members of the congregation of Christ Church, United Church of Christ, Annville, Pennsylvania. During this three-year period the pastoral ministry in the parish was carried out in the normal manner. This project became an integral part of the parish work and was seldom mentioned, in order to avoid affecting the results. The members of the parish were aware that I was involved in a doctoral project, but very few had any knowledge of the area being studied. Further, the project did not alter the remainder of the parish program in any significant manner, with the exception of the fact that a number of the inactive members responded in some measurable way. The project is, therefore, a plan which can be readily adapted and utilized by any parish in which inactive members are a concern. The project tests an assumption that expectations of preaching are changing, primarily because of increasing educational attainments of laypersons in African American churches.  Results of these investigations, presented in 24 tables, show that the majority of college students and laypersons agree on many questions concerning the importance of preaching. The methodology employed the Factorial Survey Approach among laypersons in congregations of American Baptist, Church of the Brethren, and General Conference Mennonite denominations.  The hypothesis that a double standard exists in laypersons' expectations of the integrity of ordained versus non-ordained church leadership was not supported by the data collected. The preacher conducts a retrospective assessment utilizing cassette tape recordings of sermons along with a detailed, in-depth questionnaire.  The strategy is comprehensive, divided into three major components: design, implementation procedure, and model for processing the data.  It is illustrated by application to four representative sermons, with extensive data gathered from 211 respondents. Clergy respondents prefer a leadership style of people orientation.  In transitional communities, church growth is correlated with population changes and church programming. Where the people as a whole and the pastor have shared significant mutual trust, such 'corporate' trust begins to weaken while the personal ties, or 'one to one' trust between the pastor and individual parishioners grows deeper.  What do these paradoxical-seeming changes mean?  nearly eighty such pastorates were studied to learn how the pastor can maintain strong corporate trust as well as the individual trust that results in good pastoral care. Although each church is unique in size and composition, as well as in the circumstances surrounding the pastor's departure, the common element of grief is present.  Personal interviews with church leaders elicited various expressions of sadness in the loss of their pastor.  With learnings related to grief resulting from death and separation, application is then made to the loss of a significant other, a pastor. Biblical and theological references are included.
