Project"],"creator_tesim":["Bugg, Garrett"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with military personnel","Pastoral psychology","Pastoral counseling"],"abstract_tesim":["Scholars have recently taken up military moral injury as a subject of research, developing theological and practical approaches to define and respond to the invisible wound. With the exception of military chaplains, moral injury remains a concept generally unknown by clergy. This project explores current pastoral responses to moral injury in order to discern what constitutes effective pastoral care. The qualitative research method includes a preliminary survey and semi-structured interviews with local clergy in Hampton Roads, Virginia, which is home to military bases from every branch of the armed services and NATO. Findings yield insights about specific practices important to responding pastorally to moral injury: listening, building trust, staying the course, and creativity. Dignity therapy has been well studied. Much of the research has been done by the developer and prolific researcher, Chochinov, and his teams. DT is beginning to come to the attention of the pastoral care/chaplaincy communities. Pastors who are responsive to these approaches are often soon faced with a set of fundamental questions, such as these: How much and what type of counseling should the pastor provide? Should it be limited to support, to pastoral care? Might it include teaching as well as support? Under what circumstances might it involve counseling in the more formal sense of the term, or, even more intensively for the adequately prepared pastor, therapy? When might any of these be better carried out in a group setting, as opposed to one on one? Moreover, implicitly if not out in the open, there are questions of the church’s involvement in the ministry of counseling: Is it a conscious mission of the particular congregation to provide its pastor to persons or groups as a counselor? Is it appropriate for its pastor to be devoting significant amounts of time to such a ministry? Is the church setting even a proper place for counseling–or, more intensively, therapy–to be conducted? A case study covering a period of eight months provides the data for the exploration. The time span was January through August 1978. Within that time the patient, who is also a parishioner of mine, refused to undergo cardiac catheterization on one occasion and three times refused to undergo open-heart surgery which involved a mitral valve implant and three bypass grafts. As we shall see, the patient exhibited a high degree of anxiety and employed various tactics in his efforts to cope with his anxiety. We shall also be privy to the pressures to which he was subjected and the pressures which he exerted upon his family, the medical staff, and his friends, including me. A somewhat unique dimension of the project is based in part on the fact that, at the patient’s request and with the permission of the chief surgeon, I was present during the surgical procedure. It will focus on the psychological, sociological, theological, and practical aspects of the parish pastor’s ministry with children. Special attention is given to contemporary child developmental theories (chapter two) and to counseling techniques which may be used with children (chapter three). The crisis situations of grief, divorce, and hospitalization illustrate situations in which the pastor may use the insights of child developmental theory and child counseling techniques in the pastoral care of children. It reflects on the way the harsh history of the anthracite area has shaped the attitudes and actions of members of the United Methodist Churches in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. In this respect special reference is made to the coal mines, the Molly Maguires, institutional violence, ethnic diversity, poverty, the railroads, economic depression, and local church history. Using a case study method, the project reflects upon the practice of a gentle style of ministry in various pastoral settings and its contribution toward overcoming obstacles to health and healing in these congregations. These settings include situations of resistance, distrust, and abuse of power. Boundary-setting and encounters with the demonic are also discussed.The main thesis of the project is gentleness creates a supportive, gracious and sacred space in which individuals as well as congregations can feel free and safe enough to let down their protective defenses and receive the healing and health which God offers. In the sacred space created by gentleness, God is at work to heal and to enable individuals and congregations to discern their power to overcome abuse in non-abusive ways. Gentleness, as gracious respect, enables people to change their attitudes and behavior to one another, God, and the community. This project's goal is to offer recommendations for local church ministry and insights for pastors as they attempt to minister to persons facing crisis pregnancy decisions and their consequences.Through an interview process involving forty-six respondents, the project strives to identify the variety of factors perceived to have influenced decisions in response to crisis pregnancies, to describe the nature, and to assess the relative strength of such influences in the woman's experience. A questionnaire was designed to gather information regarding the pastors' experiences and needs in their counseling ministry.  A learning design was created to address those needs.  Twenty pastors enrolled in the fourteen, three-hour training sessions.  The pastors' positive response and evaluation indicated a need for such training. A model for understanding the clergy divorce process emerged with recommendations for pastoral care and counseling.  The data confirms that clergy with children experience fourteen predictable salient events and clergy without children experience twelve salient events in the divorce process.  This modified ethnographic study demonstrates that some of these events are more painful than others.
