Pastors who are responsive to these approaches are often soon faced with a set of fundamental questions, such as these: How much and what type of counseling should the pastor provide? Should it be limited to support, to pastoral care? Might it include teaching as well as support? Under what circumstances might it involve counseling in the more formal sense of the term, or, even more intensively for the adequately prepared pastor, therapy? When might any of these be better carried out in a group setting, as opposed to one on one? Moreover, implicitly if not out in the open, there are questions of the church’s involvement in the ministry of counseling: Is it a conscious mission of the particular congregation to provide its pastor to persons or groups as a counselor? Is it appropriate for its pastor to be devoting significant amounts of time to such a ministry? Is the church setting even a proper place for counseling–or, more intensively, therapy–to be conducted? A 1982 survey of congregations found sixty-nine percent with pastor pattern, sixteen percent bench, and eleven percent team.  A 1985 sampling of members showed substantial advocacy for broad sharing of leadership, with strongest support in team churches and least in bench. The cases also show that, in spite of recent improvement, some persons continue to be neglected and abused in institutions. The study employed a retrospective analysis of demographic and diagnostic data on treatment records from 112 patients who received individual treatment at the agency in 1986. Thirty-two percent of referrals were from pastors, most of whom were from mainline Protestant denominations. Marital complaints were cited most often among patients. Chi-Square analyses indicated patients referred by pastors were no different than those from other sources. Clergy respondents prefer a leadership style of people orientation.  In transitional communities, church growth is correlated with population changes and church programming. The context of this project is the psychology of Carl Jung and the spirituality of John of the Cross.  Their perspectives are utilized in formulating and implementing a psychospiritual model of adult development.  The model challenges our story and guides us on the human journey. The model can be adapted to various areas of ministry. This project highlights the model's usefulness for pastoral counseling.  The qualitative study provided some initial insights that are tentative and inconclusive. The integrative approach of the model incorporates the intrapsychic, interpersonal, and transpersonal dimensions of the human personality.  The model can be adapted for use in different ministries, although this project focuses on the ministry of pastoral counseling.  The qualitative study yielded some initial insights that are tentative and inconclusive.
