The small number of pastors participating in this effort limits the strength with which conclusions can be stated. This project produced a preliminary indication that a particular style of isolated ministry is associated with low referral activity on the part of clergymen, and that this style can be altered by a carefully-constructed, brief educational experience. The writer hopes that further study, by himself or other researchers, will contribute additional data to these findings. There are two issues which are essentials to this project but which are not discussed in the report. These should be identified at the outset. The first of these issues is the writer’s assumption that Christian commitment and psychological insights are not, by nature, antagonistic to one another. On the contrary, I begin with a belief that an appropriate use of psychological concepts can enrich pastoral ministry. The material discussed in this report will be of little interest to those who do not share this presupposition. The second issue is the use of masculine pronouns in this report to describe those who practice pastoral ministry. All those persons who were in the original research sample were male and references to these, in the interest of accuracy, are in the masculine gender. An effort was made early in the writing to shift to a more inclusive form when referring to pastors beyond this research group. The result of that effort was both awkward and confusing. Thus, masculine pronouns, despite their limitation, have been used throughout this report in referring to members of the clergy."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860232778547200,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:41.575Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b29f7bb7-d1e2-4bf1-9959-25ac0f7bce97","accessControl_ssim":["6d14f5f4-77bb-4eb6-ad6f-8a598ff85b1b"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["The life of Jesus: a program of Christian education for the retarded adult. B. Secondary Purpose: That the pastor becomes the teacher of a group or retarded adults, produces, and tests the effectiveness of the material. C. Secondary Purpose: That the pastor becomes the teacher of a group of retarded adults, produces, and tests the effectiveness of the material. In the early 1960’s, the Pleasant Hill United Methodist in Owings Mills, Maryland, began a social ministry with a group of retarded male adults at a nearby state institution, The Rosewood Center for the mentally handicapped [sic]. Could it be that some church members were giftless and therefore incapable of rendering spiritual service? Did some members possess more than one spiritual gift while others possessed none? Would participants who could not identify their spiritual gifts at the outset of a learning experience be able to identify them afterwards? What should the nature and outline of such a course of study be? To what extent should the biblical materials on spiritual gifts be covered? Are there any indicators from one’s personality that might help him or her discern spiritual gifts? How important are they in the lift of the church? And how do they relate to the fruit of the Holy Spirit and direct commands of scripture? These questions and others prompted the author to design a course focused on the spiritual discernment process. The author purposed to teach the biblical materials on the subject, to present lists of characteristics describing each of the gifts, to administer tests to evaluate the participant's knowledge of spiritual gifts of others in the group, and to offer spiritual passages as a guide to personal development leading to discernment."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860233291300864,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:42.064Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-10-01T14:31:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-10-01T14:31:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1064ebc1-e299-4580-99e7-cf02b6b789d5","accessControl_ssim":["1b7a7af0-2203-4a80-b4b1-e50bfb64d6fa"],"depositor_ssim":["library@lancasterseminary.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["library@lancasterseminary.edu"],"title_tesim":["Pastoral Care of Children in Crisis"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-10-01T14:31:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-10-01T14:31:08Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5b3543e2-0b1b-4107-a163-eebdfbbdb2ca"],"hasLease_ssim":["aee6b151-354d-4290-8447-ff4711fcbcea"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1975"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Special attention is given to contemporary child developmental theories (chapter two) and to counseling techniques which may be used with children (chapter three). The crisis situations of grief, divorce, and hospitalization illustrate situations in which the pastor may use the insights of child developmental theory and child counseling techniques in the pastoral care of children. Chapter 7 reviews the validation of this project by a trained interviewer to determine whether or not the process has been the major cause of growth and revitalization in the congregation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873286327107584,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:53:10.409Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:10:53Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:53:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"43b51d33-6466-49eb-b20a-367d503862a5","accessControl_ssim":["e81e4f5e-083a-4755-9c35-444923f9d6f8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The construction and validation of a simulation experience dealing with attitudes toward death and dying"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:10:52Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:47:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["95600db5-6afb-484a-966e-156074a79a2f"],"hasLease_ssim":["9ea8fe53-aa1f-4912-b712-b9bc91d2fb75"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1975"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Persons--as they relate to themselves, to one another, and to God. Persons--as they express their needs and try to meet one another's needs. Persons--as they seek to discover the meaning behind tragedy and joy, and the significance of life and death. The parish ministry has the unique opportunity and responsibility to express the love of God and the salvation of our Lord Jesus Christ to persons as they encounter the great moments of their lives--birth, baptism, confirmation, marriage, and death. The entire milieu of life is encompassed within the parish ministry and the lives of people are seen in their entirety, completeness, and wholeness. One does not specialize as one relates to people in the parish. Of necessity, the parish minister must relate to the whole person--body, mind, and spirit. Even more important, it is necessary for the minister to see himself as loved of God and as a whole person. Only then is he able to relate his and God's love to those lives which are entrusted to his care. It is an awesome responsibility, but inherent to the task is the conviction that he is doing the will of God and is seeking to show God's love to persons. This conviction enables ministry. It provides the incentive and the impetus to minister in a world that continually denies personhood and the worth of individual and collective man."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873287426015232,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:53:11.457Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:10:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:53:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e1eb8db4-4916-4610-9710-8c492e45f072","accessControl_ssim":["4246881d-b74e-414d-81ad-f4492755f03c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Congregational Expectations of Pastoral Care"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:10:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:47:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f5eb6c23-3e16-4101-8986-c2b6d8859958"],"hasLease_ssim":["2cf549ce-4d4b-462b-acce-e0b2af253d19"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1978"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. It was conducted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctor of Ministry degree at the Lancaster Theological Seminary in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The purpose for making the study was to provide information to the Presbytery of Baltimore and its member churches and pastors regarding the attitudes and expectations of lay persons, in both leadership and non-leadership capacities, in the area of pastoral care and counseling. Second, the project was selected in order to better understand the concerns of church members whom the candidate is training students to serve through Clinical Pastoral Education. This committee was the pioneer among the synodical committees on Christian Education in the Reformed Church. Its membership included some of the outstanding men of the reformed church, and its program many of the finest achievements in Christian education. Since the merger of the Reformed church in the United States and the Evangelical Synods this committee as such has been dissolved but its members are continuing the work as an inter-synodical group. No attempt has been made to present a complete chronological history of the work of the committee. In keeping with the purpose this is an interpretive history. Outstanding personalities and events have been included in so far as they were related to the various projects considered. The main emphasis, however, has been placed upon the growth and significance of the committee used in preparing this history."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873285069864960,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:53:09.210Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
