With the community seated around the table in a Presbyterian (USA) church, the congregation was studied for six-months using linked quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. Architectural, historical and theological sources from the Reformed tradition inform the study. The author chose four case studies of pastors and churches in the Presbyterian Church USA who are the 'Joshua' following the 'Moses' of their churches. The long pastorates range from twenty-one to forty- five years. The churches are thriving in increases of worship attendance, membership, budget and staff. This paper documents a historical process toward partnership at work within Presbyterian leadership and an impasse which now blocks its forward movement.  It develops a practical theology for ecclesial leadership by utilizing Daniel Day Wiliams' interpretation of the imago dei as the will to belong and Edwin H. The project develops a 'theological plumbline' or measuring guideline from the writings of the noted theologian Dr Juergen Moltmann, in order to establish an identity model for the church.  In addition, a sociological-psychological survey is developed that replicates the Presbyterian Committee National Study of 1976 Examination of Membership Loss. The replicated study is applied to a pilot church, the United Church of Riverview, Michigan.
