The project develops a 'theological plumbline' or measuring guideline from the writings of the noted theologian Dr Juergen Moltmann, in order to establish an identity model for the church.  In addition, a sociological-psychological survey is developed that replicates the Presbyterian Committee National Study of 1976 Examination of Membership Loss. The replicated study is applied to a pilot church, the United Church of Riverview, Michigan. Following his research the author analyzes similar components in the new church development he serves.  With the aid of A church planning questionnaire by Grayson L Tucker Jr, and added questions developed from the research, the writer measures his church against that of the rapidly growing new churches of the first three centuries.  Areas of similarity and weakness were identified. Chapter 4 contains the author's commentary and study guide on the Apostles' Creed for use in Christian education with older youth and adults. Its central thesis is that the black church must fully embrace female participation in ministry if it is to be true to the liberating gospel it claims as part of its heritage.  A combination of historical and theological approaches, theory, and observation techniques constitute the methodology for this study.
