By conducting in-depth interviews with 26 octogenarians, this project finds evidence to suggest positive changes on the dimensions of awareness, acceptance and autonomy during four decade-periods: the functional fifties, the family-focused sixties, the transitional seventies and the transcendent eighties. Research has shown that older adults are helped by someone who asks questions about the past.  Loneliness and depression are common symptoms of older adults.  Without a feeling that life has had meaning in the past it is easy to lose identity and integrity.  Life review helps maintain a person's integrity, identity, and self-worth.  It provides a legacy to the younger generation.  It can help a person cope with loss, grief, and depression.
