By conducting in-depth interviews with 26 octogenarians, this project finds evidence to suggest positive changes on the dimensions of awareness, acceptance and autonomy during four decade-periods: the functional fifties, the family-focused sixties, the transitional seventies and the transcendent eighties. These words describe the dynamics which occur in pastoral care visits with older people.  The project states a brief definition of each word as a pastoral care concept.  It conducts a biblical word study and, through a questionnaire, asks peers in ministry (chaplains, visitation pastors, students) to critique the validity of the proposed approach. The project concludes that many old paradigms of preaching are still valid and should be reclaimed and mastered but new paradigms also are needed for this day. The context is a Lutheran congregation in Brazil.  The project uses a method called participatory research to discover whether and to what extent the congregation and parents understand the educational role of parents.
