The thesis is that there is a body of contemporary American poetry which expresses themes that are in harmony with Lutheran theology.  The project includes an anthology of more than one hundred poems by nearly fifty twentieth-century writers organized under a variety of themes consistent with Lutheran theology. They provided data which proved this hypothesis: given the opportunity, ELC-PNG ministers and administrators can realistically reflect their socio-religious situations, accurately describe their needs in ministry and thereby develop continuing education programs to meet those needs. By means of a survey among 1,800 clergy in Minnesota, it was found that many clergy came into ministry from an extreme family system. The criteria to measure this are theological soundness, liturgical consistency, and pastoral effectiveness.  This study includes an overview of cultural and church responses to divorce, a comparison of Catholic and Lutheran theologies of marriage, an exegesis of biblical divorce texts, a local study assessing participants' evaluation of a ritual experience, and a theological discussion applying a theologia crucis and the law and gospel paradigm to the issue. Despite the vast energy poured into the renewal of Roman Catholic liturgy, this project indicates that many Catholics still do not find liturgical celebration to be an adequate expression of their search for, and expression of, God.  Study groups were devised to raise sacramental consciousness.  A comparison of responses made on reflection sheets before and after sessions indicates that the sacramental process had become overshadowed by sacramental events; and for many these events had become empty rituals.
