The project first establishes what orthodox inmate Islam is and how it is influenced by Afrocentrism. With orthodox Islam as a guide, the Moorish Science of America and the Nation of Islam are then analyzed on the same basis. African American inmate Islam is a mixture of beliefs and movements that make it difficult to define as Islam. Afrocentric influence leads to mistrust, anger, fear, and resentment of European Americans. The project interviews in depth 13 persons whose effectiveness in cross-cultural mission is widely recognized, interpeting their stories in patterns and metaphors in order to identify, equip, and place students with potential for mission in cross-cultural contexts.
